A handwritten birth name with its vowels circled and numbered on a notebook page beside a numerology chart

Ask ten people who have dabbled in numerology for their life path number and most will know it. Ask for their soul urge number and you usually get a blank look, even though it is the figure many readers spend the most time on in a full name chart. It comes only from the vowels in your birth name, and it is meant to describe what you want, as opposed to what you do or how others see you.

I have calculated a few hundred of these for clients and workshop groups. The arithmetic takes about three minutes. The interesting part is what happens after, when someone reads the description and either nods slowly or argues with it, and both reactions tell you something. Here is how to work out the number correctly, what each result is said to mean, and where I think people read too much into it.

What the Soul Urge Number Measures

In Western, Pythagorean style numerology, a full name chart has three core name numbers. The destiny or expression number uses every letter. The personality number uses only consonants. The soul urge number, also called the heart's desire number, uses only vowels.

The traditional idea is that vowels are the quieter, inner sounds of a name, so they point to private motivations: what you would choose if no one were watching. The life path, which comes from the birth date rather than the name, is described as the road you walk. The soul urge is closer to the reason you walk it. If the distinction between date and name numbers is new to you, the difference between a life path and a destiny number covers the groundwork.

How to Calculate Your Soul Urge Number

Use your full name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate, including middle names. Married names and nicknames are a separate reading.

VowelValue
A1
E5
I9
O6
U3
Y (when used as a vowel)7
  1. Write out each part of your name separately.
  2. Pick out the vowels and assign each its value.
  3. Add the vowels of each name part, and reduce each part to a single digit unless it is 11 or 22.
  4. Add the reduced parts together and reduce once more, again keeping 11 or 22.

A worked example

Take the name Clara Jane Morton. Clara gives A and A, so 1 plus 1 equals 2. Jane gives A and E, 1 plus 5 equals 6. Morton gives O and O, 6 plus 6 equals 12, which reduces to 3. Now add the parts: 2 plus 6 plus 3 equals 11. That is a master number, so it stays as 11.

Notice what happens if you skip step three and add every vowel at once: 1, 1, 1, 5, 6 and 6 give 20, which reduces to 2. Same name, different answer. Reducing each name first is the more common convention, and it is the one I use, but you will see both online. If two websites disagree about your number, this is almost always why.

The Y Question

Y is the letter that causes the most arguments. The usual rule is that Y counts as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound and no other vowel is beside it, as in Lynn or Bryony. It counts as a consonant when it starts a syllable, as in Yolanda or Maya, where the sound is a consonant glide.

When I am unsure, I calculate both versions and read both descriptions to the client. In my experience the person usually recognizes one far more strongly. That is not proof of anything, but it is a sensible way to settle an ambiguous rule.

What Each Soul Urge Number Is Said to Mean

  • 1: a desire for independence and to be first, to set your own direction.
  • 2: a longing for close partnership, harmony and being genuinely understood.
  • 3: a need to express yourself, through words, art or humor.
  • 4: a wish for stability, order and work you can see finished.
  • 5: hunger for freedom, change and new experience.
  • 6: a pull toward caring for others and building a home.
  • 7: a desire for understanding, solitude and depth over breadth.
  • 8: ambition for achievement, influence and material security.
  • 9: a wish to serve something larger and leave things better.
  • 11: a need for meaning and inspiration, often with heightened sensitivity.
  • 22: a drive to build something lasting on a large scale.

Where I Disagree With Most Readings

Many numerology sites present the soul urge as your hidden true self, as if the vowels in a name chosen by your parents reveal a fixed inner truth. I do not read it that way, and I would gently push back on anyone who does.

The descriptions are broad enough that most people find something familiar in several of them. That is the same effect that makes a horoscope feel personal. What the number can do well is give you a specific prompt to think about. If your result is 4 and you have spent five years in a job with constant upheaval, the question "do I actually want more stability?" is worth asking, whatever you believe about numbers. Use the description as a question, not a verdict.

The other mistake is treating a master number as a status symbol. An 11 soul urge is not a superior result. It is a different set of prompts, and in practice the descriptions of 11 and 2 overlap a great deal.

Reading It Alongside Your Other Numbers

The soul urge is most useful when compared with the life path. When the two point in similar directions, say a 6 soul urge with a 6 or 9 life path, readers describe an easier fit between what you want and how life tends to unfold. When they pull apart, such as a 5 soul urge with a 4 life path, the reading usually focuses on that tension: a need for freedom pressing against a pattern of responsibility. Work out your life path number too and write both down side by side before you read either description.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the soul urge number the same as the heart's desire number?

Yes. They are two names for the same calculation, which uses the vowels in your full birth name.

Should I use my married name or my birth name?

The core soul urge uses your birth name. Some readers calculate a second number from your current name to describe how your motivations are expressed now, but that is a separate reading.

Why do different calculators give me different results?

Usually because one reduces each name part before adding and the other adds every vowel at once, or because they treat Y differently. Check which method each uses.

The Practical Takeaway

Write your full birth name, add the vowels name by name, reduce each part, then add and reduce again, keeping 11 and 22. Read the description for your number as a question about what you want, not a statement about who you are, and compare it with your life path.
